Norman Huth joins Formwerks

Norman Huth is a registered architect with a passion for interiors — both interior design and interior architecture. Norman has honed his craft over 30 years of total experience, and came to Formwerks from Henriquez Partners, where he was the Director of Interior Architecture, a title coined specifically for Norman’s skills and passions.

Huth combined interior and architectural work in his position at Henriquez, a natural fit with how he approaches the discipline. “Architecture should be holistic, from landscaping right through to interiors,” he explains. “Especially with everything getting so small, it’s critical to fit all those components in. How does one move from inside to outside living? I took inspiration from my daily life, and would apply these learnings to my craft.”

Before Henriquez, he worked at James K.M. Cheng Architects, where he worked on many of Westbanks’ high-profile projects, including customizing suites for new buyers at Vancouver’s luxurious Shangri-La and the Shaw Tower.

This affinity for residential work is what drew him to join the Formwerks team. Although he enjoyed his work on high-rise, mixed-use, and multi-family developments, he was ready for a change. “I’d been following Formwerks for a while,” Huth says. “I liked the scale, the townhome focus… how these 4 and 6 story condo buildings are still very livable.”

Currently, Huth is working on some very exciting Formwerks projects — many of which are still in the earliest stages of planning. On Oak Street at 18th Avenue, Wesgroup’s Balfour townhome project will take up an entire city block. He’s also working on another 9-unit townhome development in the same area, currently in the preliminary planning stages.

Huth enjoys the creativity involved in these initial phases — in fact, planning is one of his favourite parts of the process. “Space planning is about problem solving,” he says. “You need to fit a certain number of features into one area, and it needs proper flow, to look and feel right.”

One of Huth’s favourite interior projects ever? A custom suite he designed in one of the penthouses at the Telus Tower in Downtown Vancouver, on which he worked closely with the owners to select the interior finishes, layout, and furniture. “[The owners] have several residences around the world, and would text me photos of art from their travels to use as inspiration,” he shares. “I like to learn from my clients, and interiors are a glimpse into other people and how they live.”

Welcome Norman, we are happy to have you as part of the Formwerks family.
